What is the i-Ready Diagnostic?

The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive test administered in reading and math that matches the difficulty of questions to each student's ability. The assessment starts each student at a difficulty level based on their grade level. When a student gets answers right, the questions get harder; if a student selects incorrect answers, the questions get easier. It adapts to the ability of each student quickly and efficiently.
The i-Ready Diagnostic identifies students’ strengths and weaknesses, while supporting data-driven differentiated instruction. It provides valid and reliable growth data, helping teachers track both yearly and long-term student progress. It does not replace daily instruction or curriculum.

Who takes the i-Ready Diagnostic?

It is administered to all students in grades K-6.

How are the i-Ready Reading and Math Diagnostics administered?

Students take the screener in each subject three times during the school year - at the beginning, middle, and end. They are typically administered in either two 30-minute sessions for older students or three 20 minute sessions for younger students.

What does i-Ready measure?

i-Ready Scores
i-Ready scale scores place each student into one of five distinct Placement Levels, allowing a detailed understanding of their performance. This information helps teachers identify each student’s strengths and if additional instruction is needed in reading or math.
• Scale scores range from 100-800
• Placement Levels:
o Three or More Grade Levels Below
o Two Grade Levels Below
o One Grade Level Below
o Early On Grade Level
o Mid or Above Grade Level

i-Ready Growth Goals
i-Ready assigns differentiated growth goals to each student based on their grade level and placement level as determined by the initial Math and Reading Diagnostics administered in the beginning of the school year. These growth goals remain the same throughout the year, and are used to track and analyze student progress.
• Typical Growth – Typical growth is the average growth students on the same grade and placement level are expected to make in a school year.
• Stretch Growth – Stretch growth is a more ambitious growth target aimed at moving students closer to (or beyond) proficiency faster.

i-Ready Personalized Instruction
i-Ready places students into personalized lesson paths based on their Diagnostic performance outcomes. These lessons target instruction to every student’s strengths and areas of growth. Research indicates students achieve greater progress with Personalized Instruction when they use it 30-49 minutes per subject per week while maintaining a high Percent of Lessons Passed. Students may access their personalized instruction pathway through the Clever portal downloaded on their iPads.
