Curriculum Department - Reading Assessments

Our Approach to Reading Assessment

At North Bellmore School District, we utilize a multi-measured approach to reading assessment to ensure that every student receives the support they need to develop strong literacy skills. Our comprehensive assessment system provides valuable insights into students’ reading abilities, allowing us to tailor instruction based on individual strengths and areas for growth.

To assess foundational literacy skills, all K-6 students participate in the Acadience Reading Benchmark Assessment. This evidence-based tool evaluates key reading components such as phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and comprehension. The results help guide instructional decisions and identify students who may benefit from additional support.

In addition, all students in grades K-6 take the iReady Reading Diagnostic, which provides a deeper analysis of phonological awareness, phonics, high-frequency words, vocabulary, and comprehension. This adaptive assessment helps track student progress and personalize learning pathways.

For our youngest learners, we have developed a Primary Literacy Benchmark Assessment for kindergarten students and select students in grades 1 and 2. This assessment focuses on essential early literacy skills such as letter and sound recognition, rhyming, high-frequency words, and other foundational reading behaviors.

Alongside these benchmark assessments, our teachers use curriculum-based measures throughout the year to monitor progress and adjust instruction as needed. By combining multiple sources of data, we ensure that every student receives targeted instruction that fosters reading success.

Through our multi-measured assessment approach, we remain committed to providing high-quality, research-based literacy instruction that supports all students on their journey to becoming confident, capable readers.
