Curriculum Department - Reading Programs

A Comprehensive Approach to Growing Strong Readers

Our teachers and specialists utilize a variety of resources and strategies to engage students in meaningful, joyful reading experiences. From phonics and fluency to comprehension and critical thinking, our comprehensive approach supports students at every stage of their literacy journey.

From Kindergarten through Grade 3, the District implements Fundations as the core foundational skills reading program. Primary classrooms are stocked with a variety of decodable texts that allow students to practice decoding skills. Geodes, our primary decodable resource, aligns with the Fundations scope and sequence while also building background knowledge and developing vocabulary.

Students in Kindergarten through Grade 2 also participate in daily phonemic awareness instruction using the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum. Through this program, students engage in activities that strengthen their ability to blend, segment, and manipulate words, syllables, and phonemes.

In Grades 3 through 6, teachers continue to enhance students' language comprehension skills—including vocabulary, background knowledge, syntax, and semantics—while also refining their word recognition abilities to support increasingly complex reading.

Across all grades, K-6 students engage in interactive read-alouds, shared reading, small-group differentiated instruction, and independent reading. A variety of Fountas & Pinnell Classroom materials support instruction in these areas. Additionally, students receive personalized lessons through their iReady digital instructional pathway to further develop their reading skills.

Students who require more targeted reading support receive individualized or small group instruction. Our classroom teachers and reading specialists personalize instruction to address each learner’s most essential skill areas. Based on individual needs, students may receive support through specialized programs or literacy approaches such as the Wilson Reading System, Wilson Just Words, Orton-Gillingham, Leveled Literacy Intervention, Visualizing and Verbalizing, EdMark, and other evidence-based interventions.
