John G. Dinkelmeyer Elementary School

Music Department

The purpose of music classes and lessons at Dinkelmeyer School is to develop music literacy in our children.  As music educators, we believe all students possess the capacity to be musical and creative.  Studies show that developing music skills help students to become higher-level thinkers, better at spatial-temporal reasoning, and can help bridge an understanding of the world around us.  At the Dinkelmeyer School, we are dedicated to bringing a program of music excellence to our students.

The music program at the Dinkelmeyer School is structured to provide a broad range of musical styles and hands-on learning.  Students in Kindergarten through Sixth grade receive general music instruction once a six-day cycle.  Instrumental instruction begins in the Fourth grade and continues through sixth grade. Students receive one lesson in either a band or orchestral instrument in addition to their general music class. Performance Ensembles are offered to Fifth and Sixth Graders in Chorus, Band, and Orchestra.  In addition, select ensembles are also offered to vocal and jazz band students in the sixth grade.

Opportunities to work with guest conductors and specialists are provided through annual All-County Festivals.  In the performance ensembles, students are also given the chance to perform outside of the school, enriching our local and greater Long Island community.

As music educators, we strive to align our curriculum with both national and state music standards as well as the new Common Core Curriculum.
