Park Avenue Students Learn Lifesaving Fire Safety Skills

Fire Prevention Month provided students at Park Avenue Elementary School an important opportunity to learn how to stay safe in emergency situations.
On Oct. 6, local firefighters visited the school to discuss fire safety, demonstrate firefighting equipment, and teach students what to do if they encounter a fire. The North Merrick Fire Department’s smokehouse was parked out back, which simulates a home. Students in kindergarten, first and second grade learned valuable lessons about smoke alarms, home escape plans and the importance of remaining calm and alert during emergencies.
After a fire safety overview, they then got to practice exiting a home. As it filled with fake smoke and an alarm went off, youngsters crawled to the window, climbed through and were led to safety from firefighters. After their visit, each child was given a plastic firefighter helmet and a coloring book.
