Many Guests Entertained at Martin Avenue’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’

A talented cast of sixth graders turned a Disney animated classic into a captivating live performance at Martin Avenue Elementary School. There were four showings of “Beauty and the Beast Junior” from March 4-6.
The sixth grade musical has been a long-standing tradition at the school as a special experience before graduation. All students participated as either a member of the cast or stage crew and were supported by a director and parent volunteers.
Rehearsals began in November and the sixth graders spent months learning lines, lyrics and choreography. One of the highlights was the performance of well-known song “Be Our Guest.” There were also full costumes and sets.
Daniel Batista, who played the Beast, said it was a great experience portraying a character and getting to do a voice. Natalia LaBourn, cast as Belle, enjoyed singing and acting with many of her longtime friends.
Mrs. Potts was played by Sadie Harsanyi, who said it was her first acting experience and a fun way to close out elementary school. Angelica Nardo, a member of the ensemble, added that the entire grade bonded as they worked together toward a common goal. Jackson Mooney was a member of the stage crew and operated one of the spotlights, which was a new role this year.
There was a daytime performance for Martin Avenue students as well as three evening shows for parents. Principal Dr. Yannucci said it was evident how much preparation went into the show.
“It doesn’t come together on its own; it’s a lot of work,” he said. “The annual musical is one of the trademark characteristics of Martin Avenue School. It connects each sixth grade class through creativity, imagination and teamwork.”
