Student-Inspired Board Game Drive Delivers Joy at Dinkelmeyer

Student leaders are striving to make sure their peers have the best experience during recess at John G. Dinkelmeyer Elementary School. When the weather moves recess indoors, there is now a plethora of games to choose from because of the efforts of the student council.
The indoor recess cart had several games but, over time, were becoming worn or were missing pieces. Student council members Gianna Santos and Briana Sheehan spearheaded the idea for a board game collection. After running the idea past adviser Stephanie Meehan and Principal Danica Brugge, they hung several handmade posters around the school. During the two-week collection, more than 30 new and gently used games were donated by Dinkelmeyer families.
“I’m so grateful, because now the school has extra stuff for indoor recess,” Gianna said, adding that is rewarding to know all of her peers will benefit.
Student council members sorted the donations and decided which ones would be added, keeping several games in reserve to replenish the cart as needed. Indoor recess is held in the classrooms, and students can ask their lunch/recess aides to visit the cart in the cafeteria to borrow a game. Among the new games are Clue Junior and Twister, as well as an additional Jenga.
“There is definitely more of a selection now,” Ms. Brugge said. “I’m so excited that we have such thoughtful leaders in student council, who bring wonderful ideas to the group and have the determination and work ethic to make the school better for all.”
